@ Passing Strange

Passing Strange (formerly Travelogue) is the story of a young man's emergence out of an oppressively incurious black middle class world and his subsequent journey through various promised-land bohemias en route to an elusive sense of belonging. The piece explores the limiting notions of black authenticity, the double outsider status of black bohemians, and the definition of "home."

This music-theater piece started out as a cabaret show developed at Joe's Pub in New York and debuted at Symphony Space as a part of the American Comic Vision Festival.

The same Stew Ensemble that accompanies Stew on live shows will appear onstage. Annie Dorsen is directing. Along with Stew, Heidi Rodewald is contributing music to this work -- to which Stew will add lyrics. David Neuman is the choreographer. Passing Strange was commissioned by the Public Theater of New York and was further developed at the 2004 Sundance Theater Lab.
